Short answer: For a few items, Detroit's free weekly curbside bulk pickup is the cheapest option: up to about 2 cubic yards at the curb by 7 a.m. on your day. Detroit residents can also use free drop-off centers. For bigger loads, items inside the house, or a deadline, use the City's paid pickup, a dumpster or a private hauler.
The five ways to get rid of junk in Detroit
| Option | Best for | Limits | Who loads it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free curbside bulk (City DPW) | A couch, a mattress, a few bags of renovation debris | About 2 cubic yards and 1,000 lb, curb only, by 7 a.m. on your day; no paint, tires, batteries or chemicals | You carry it to the curb |
| Paid City bulk pickup | Bigger piles you can stage at the front curb | DPW quotes by size and weight; won't pick up from garages, alleys or yards | You stage it; DPW hauls |
| Free citizen drop-off centers | Detroit residents with a truck or trailer | 1 cubic yard or 1,000 lb per person per day, Detroit ID; no household garbage or construction debris | You load, drive and unload |
| Dumpster rental | Multi-day renovations and big cleanouts | Driveway space, possible street-use permits, weight limits set by the company | You (or your crew) fill it |
| Private junk hauler | Whole-unit trash-outs, basements, garages, deadlines | Hazardous waste still needs a proper facility | The crew carries it out and hauls it |

How do I know which option fits my job?
- Is it under about 2 cubic yards and already outside? Use curbside bulk on your collection day.
- Is it bigger, but you can stage it at the front curb? Ask DPW for a paid pickup estimate.
- Do you have a truck and Detroit ID? A drop-off center is free.
- Is it inside, upstairs, in a garage or behind the house, or is there a move-in date? That's hauler work, because the City only picks up from the curb.
- Is it paint, chemicals, tires, batteries or fuel? None of these go to the curb. DPW points residents to the Household Hazardous Waste facility at 2000 E. Ferry St.
DIY or hire it out?
| Do it yourself | Hire a hauler | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free curbside or drop-off; your time, fuel and any truck rental | A quoted fee based on volume, weight, access and timing |
| Speed | Waits for your collection day, or several drop-off trips | Usually one visit |
| Labor | You carry everything out | The crew carries it out, including stairs and basements |
| Fits | A few items, flexible timing | Trash-outs, estate and garage cleanouts, eviction or turnover deadlines |
Tips that save money either way
- Sort first: donate usable furniture, scrap metal, and recycle what you can.
- Bag loose debris in contractor bags and bundle lumber under 4 feet, which is what DPW requires at the curb anyway.
- Take photos of everything before you ask for quotes. Photos are how haulers estimate volume.
- Don't pile bulk in front of a vacant lot. DPW says it's less likely to be collected there.
